I'm a guy who used to write lots and lots of music. My lack of success became a little troubling, so now I write about Belltown and photograph squirrels. You got a problem with that?

One Day Wonder #155

For 2 horns, 2 trumpets and 2 trombones.

Working for another day. I’m getting the distinct impression that writing music isn’t going over too well with my coworkers. I warned them about it and they said it was OK, so it’s not like I sprung it on them out of the blue. I think I’ve mentioned this before but working doesn’t prohibit me from writing music, it just restricts me somewhat. If I feel like getting a little expansive, I have to think twice, because I have to factor in getting distracted about a hundred times a day, so producing something intricate is not likely. I guess you might be able to hear the inherent simplicity in these work tunes. This one is no different. My premise pretty basic: I wanted to employ the “cascade effect” in all the instruments and pit them against each other. Without the tuba to unify things, each duo can contrast well against its counterparts. The piece also has an airier feel due to the lack of a strong bass voice. It’s tough for me to like this piece because, as much as I was trying to exploit its strengths, I couldn’t fully concentrate on it. Still, it’s not like I hate what I’ve done here. I’m just looking forward to conceiving and writing future pieces at my leisure. These things take time to figure out and I miss that "figuring time."
