For 1 trumpet, 1 trombone and tuba.
This is another piece I wrote at work. All I had in mind here was to give the trombone a solid workout with lots of leaps. That’s all. I have the poor trombones playing the outfield so much that I feel obligated to giving at least one of them a challenge every once in a while. So although the trumpet deals out the preliminary theme and the tuba does stake out some territory of its own later on, this piece belongs to the trombone. Like almost everything I’ve written, I’ve kept practical limitations in mind, so you’ll find no sixteenth-note leaps of two octaves. Everything contained in this piece is quite attainable. In fact, this might be really easy for a pro trombone player – I’m told they exist! Well, getting the notes is just the first stage, fitting it into the context of the ensemble is the next. Although this piece doesn’t include anything close to a memorable tune and it has zero pyrotechnics to it, I’m really fond of it. It started at nothing but a simple premise and it emerged as a nice little statement. Please enjoy.
