I'm a guy who used to write lots and lots of music. My lack of success became a little troubling, so now I write about Belltown and photograph squirrels. You got a problem with that?

One Day Wonder #147

For 2 horns, 1 trumpet, 2 trombones and tuba.

This has become what I’ve term the “tune ensemble.” As you can guess, there’s usually some kind of melody involved. It’s generally not some kind of strange invention or strident statement that tries to justify anything more than its own existence. And this piece acquits itself nicely, although it’s nothing unique. It’s just a little minor-tinged number (with the lovely and versatile 6/8 time signature) that sustains the eighth-note pulse throughout and features a few rhythmic forays along the way. Even though the ensemble is a little formulaic, the piece itself isn’t. Its form is Intro-A-B-A-C-A, so it differs from the AABA workhorse. Other than that, I don’t have much to say about it. That’s probably because I didn’t think about it too much while I was writing it. I started it, watched some football, wrote some more and a few hours later, it was done. By the way, the Seahawks won. And there you have it.
