I'm a guy who used to write lots and lots of music. My lack of success became a little troubling, so now I write about Belltown and photograph squirrels. You got a problem with that?

One Day Wonder #26

For 1 horn, 1 trumpet, 2 trombones and tuba.

I wrote this with the purpose of using a regular rotation of odd meters – 7/8, 5/8 and 3/8 – and attempting to make it sound somehow normal and coherent. It was kind of tough, since a rotating array of meters makes for some uneasy phrasing. The trick is to pick an arbitrary halfway point in your phrase, write some sort of melodic gesture and then put something else in the other half with something that completes it. That's all you have to do! And then you have to write the rest of the piece! See how simple it is! Anyhow, it wasn't easy, but I like this piece and I think it works out well.
